Erythritol is a naturally occuring sugar alcohol. First discovered in 1848 is only became a popular sugar replacement in the 1990’s.
Erythritol is naturally occuring in certain fruits but is mainly produced on a industrial level by fermatation of glucose with yeast.
Being almost 70% as sweet as sucrose (table sugar) whilst containing almost no calories, not affected blood sugar levels or contributing to tooth decay makes it a popular ingredient in the food industry.
In Thailand Erythritol is used as an additive for refreshment drinks including juices and carbonated drinks, coffee and tea products, dietary supplements, and confectionary products.
